Frome open their account with a win over Swindon

By | March 1, 2019

Frome started their 2019 season in Division 1, having been relegated from the Premier League, with a win over Swindon Dolphins, 11-6.

By the end of the opening period the Somerset team were looking sharp opening up a 4-goal lead over the visitors who were without some key players for their opening game, including Matt James who is out with a rotator cuff injury picked up at the end of last season.

In the second quarter Swindon finally found the back of the net through Dave Quinliven, and he also added a second a few minutes later, with Chris Selby adding a third for the Wiltshire team, and cut the deficit back to 5-3.

After the half time break Frome’s scoring rate was cut back, whether through pre-season fitness, rustyness or Swindon’s eight players doggedness defence, it’s hard to say, but they had added a further three goals to Swindon’s two, to make it 8-5 going into the final period.

Swindon rallied slightly in the opening of the final quarter with Quinliven completing his hat-trick. However, Frome then got their act together and added a further three goals to finish a comprehensive victory.

Brad Poole finished with a hat-trick for Frome, and their other scorers were Paul Vowells with two, as did Chris Hodges, and his brother, Martyn Hodges, who has returned to Frome after a season with Weston-super-Mare got one, as did their captain, Frazer Thompson.

Besides Quinliven’s hat-trick, other Swindon’s scorer were Chris Selby, Ian Brewer and Mark Lawlor. Swindon were coached by BWWPL life member Matt James.
